NYFW: Narciso Rodriguez Spring 2014

IT’S not often, actually, that fashion gives rise to new items. We’ve seen it, done it, got the T-shirt all before and we’re more concerned with rifling through the drawers of the past than we are setting a new agenda when it comes to the technicalities. Narciso Rodriguez has other ideas and this evening introduced us to the “half skirt”, a skirt and shorts hybrid that is just as suggestive as the mini but has a little more practicality about it. Nice. Elsewhere among the collection and the designer mostly stuck to square cuts, bandeau necklines and flat-looking shapes. From afar it looked masculine, androgynous but close-up there were slithers of shine and layers of pretty lace to imbue a sense of femininity. 5230cc6c2f7cc6e6d5000010

Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer

British designer Kim Jones drew from classic American imagery for his Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2014 collection, which ranged from patterned bandanas and khaki parkas covered in travel patches to preppy sportswear and 1920s-esque evening suits. “This was the American road trip, just enjoying and celebrating Americana from NASA through to the traditional things such as bandanas,” he said, speaking backstage. Silhouettes were typically well-tailored and masculine which, while sophisticated, left few creative surprises, but one piece that certainly caught the eye of the fashion crowd was a retro black silk jacket featuring the iconic LV monogram. Take a look below.

Spring Collection 2013 at New York Fashion Week

NEW YORK – The story of New York Fashion Week has been told in mostly black and white — making it that much harder to ignore all the unusual prints on the runway, even if they, too, were color-free. Marc Jacobs put out oversized black-and-white and red stripes on Monday a day after stripe-happy Tommy Hilfiger, whose red stripes were inspired by rope. Carolina Herrera showed an abstract geometric print on Monday, while Elie Tahari took his prints from Palm Beach, mixing palm leaves, leopard skin and tropical flowers. in earlier previews, Thakoon Panichgul had playful birds, Suno had a retro cell phone print and Jason Wu had prints reminiscent of an X-Ray. At Rebecca Taylor the print was Hawaiian, with fish scales at Monique Lhuillier and “space clouds” at Nicole Miller. “Prints are personality, they have emotion, they tell a story,” said Stacey Bendet, designer of Alice and Olivia — herself wearing a leopard-print dress on Monday to present a collection that included a variety of florals — from digital prints to painterly and candy-colored. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week continues through Thursday before the fashion crowd heads to London, Milan and Paris.

MARC JACOBS

Let’s switch gears: For the past five days, the chatter at New York Fashion Week has been about softening the edges, but Marc Jacobs changed the conversation — as he often does — after going graphic.

Black-and-white stripes followed by red stripes, tan stripes and more black-and-white stripes came rapid fire down the runway. Continue reading

New York: MARC JACOBS

Marc Jacobs Winter 2012-13 Collection

©ourtesy of designandculturebyed New York 2012/2013 Fashion Week: The Winter Collection by New York based designer, Marc Jacobs was really … Crazy! It was like 18-17th century fashion mixed with 21st century street style! This fashion week show hosted lots of colors, interesting patterns and some funny looking heels. And the best of all were the too big sized hats made out of fur or other materials. It is worth to mention that the coats that are presented will be the most hottest pieces for winter. Bohemian story through the New York designer Marc Jacobs, who presented his latest collection autumn / winter 2012-2013 in the last Fashion Week in New York.

New York Fashion Week: Marc Jacobs hires underage models for catwalk show

Marc Jacobs latest: Enters underage models debate by hiring two 14 year-olds to walk in his fall/winter 2012 show, which is against industry guidelines.

Pre-New York Fashion Week, chairman of the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), Diane von Furstenberg, released an exhaustive list of guidelines aimed at keeping models fit. Supplying healthy meals on fittings, professional help for those struggling with eating disorders and checking IDs to ensure models are over 16 pre-shows were just some of the items on the modelling check list. But it seems this last one has already been forgotten. Less than two weeks after the list was released, top designer Marc Jacobs has sent two underage models down his autumn/winter 2012 catwalk on Monday, February 13. Brazilian model Thairina Garcia and star of the winter 2011 Prada campaign, Ondira Hardin, both took to the catwalk despite the fact that they are both, reportedly, 14 years-old. Far from being apologetic, Jacobs has defended his choice of models, insisting that the CFDA’s Health Initiative cannot influence his shows: “I do the show the way I think it should be and not the way somebody tells me it should be,” he told the New York Continue reading

Fur flying on the catwalk NYC F/W

Fur, cats and leather harnesses hit the runsway

Story by amy verner

Globe Style’s Amy Verner has packed up from Paris and landed in New York to cover Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The third day of shows presented an eclectic mix of fabrics, feminine silhouettes and foreign influences
Anyone with an encyclopedic fashion memory or a love for designer Phoebe Philo will recognize this rounded shoulder-full sleeve-belted waist combo from the Celine Spring 2012 collection (hers, an updated nod to Balenciaga and Christian Dior). And Som’s execution is strong – minus the filmy organza skirt.

One designer’s “merlot” is another’s “plum.” Add Peter Som to the list of labels showing this rich wine-y hue for next fall. Here, it stands out as stiff wool melton outerwear fashion.

No doubt a great amount of time and skill went into making this fox patchwork coat. Which is why pieces like these should not be saved for special occasions. Why not wear it to the grocery store! Or for watching hockey practice! No doubt a great amount of time and skill went into making this fox patchwork coat. Which is why pieces like these should not be saved for special occasions. • Som tends to introduce at least one new print to each collection. Last season, it was magnified rose blossoms in Technicolor. For this collection, it is the “mineral” print as it appears on a wool cropped jacket and day dress.
Fashion week styles though mixed in with many foreign influences, has a freshness that American fashion designers are known for. Marc Jacobs and other fashion designers like Peter Som, know how to capture those feelings that every fashion savvy woman is looking for. Jason Wu is another of Fashion weeks most cutting edge fashion designers who capture the essence of great Americana. Fashion Designer, Christian Dior – –
