Nassau, Bahamas – This year’s national costume worn by Miss Universe Grand Bahama wowed the nation as Tomii Culmer paraded in the ‘Sea Goddess’ outfit created by Nassau designer, Javotte Bethel. The aquatic theme was the obvious move, and this concept had tons of creative potential allowing us to use a wide range of sea-life trinkets. With all the press coverage around the preservation of Bahamas’ reef systems recently, we thought that connection would also work in our favour.” Javotte Bethel the owner and operator of Javotte’s House of Couture, has been gainfully employed in the fashion industry for about 20 years and began designing at the age of 12, later making her own prom dress. After high school she studied at the International Fine Arts school of Miami where she obtained an associates degree in Fashion and Graphic Design. – – Please visit Javotte Bethel’s House of Couture on Facebook – –
It might come as a surprise in a film about a deceased fashion designer who spent vast amounts of his life thinking about couture, but one of the most, if not the most, memorable scenes in the new biopic, Saint Laurent, shows a young Yves Saint Laurent completely naked as he walks towards his partner, Pierre Bergé (clad in a black satin dressing gown that reveals his tanned behind), before the young lovers jump on the bed for a romp. Despite the provocative nature of this and other racy sex scenes in the film, which was directed by Bertrand Bonello (of Le Pornographe fame) and premiered at the Festival de Cannes on Saturday, the real controversy surrounding the production has to do with the clothing. What else!
Early on, the Bonello production incurred the wrath of Saint Laurent’s long-term partner Pierre Bergé, who threatened in WWD to sue the film if it copied any of the designer’s outfits—a bit hard to avoid when making a coming-of-age movie about YSL’s life and work. The filmmakers, on their part, have accused Bergé of distributing letters to parties associated with the film to try to stop it. To this end, Bergé has refused to allow Bonello’s team to consult the brand’s archives. He also publically endorsed another biopic, Yves Saint Laurent, which debuted in January and was directed by Jalil Lespert. The Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent lent the rival film a reported 77 vintage outfits and Bergé helped conduct a scene depicting the legendary 1976 Ballet Russes fashion show. The resulting headlines in the French press declared war between the two films.
The Palais Princier Monaco was the setting for the Louis Vuitton show (@drdidou66)
Today Nicolas Ghesquiere took the Louis Vuitton cruise collection to the catwalk for the very first time. For such a grand occasion, an equally grand backdrop was needed and with the world’s starriest of stars currently holding court in the French Riveira the Palais Princier Monaco was, naturally, the perfect location. When Ghesquiere showed his first collection for the legendary house during Paris Fashion Week in February, he certainly made his mark by showing his collection in a pared-back manner. And despite the swanky setting for the Cruise 2015 show, the same execution applied.

On Friday the 13th it was all about gory darkness. After all, who said that Spring is all about light, fluidity and aethereal fabrics? For SS2014, Marc Jacobs’ message sounded loud and clear: Fuck Spring! His mood was irreverent punk meets embroidery winter fantasy, channelled through his rebel wig peroxide blondes (Cara Delevigne, Sky Ferreira, Lily McNemany and more). His mood (which is flirting with the doom & gloom of the day) is clearly mirrored into his collection for yet another season (after all last time he was refusing to get of his pyjamas).
Undoubtedly, there were pieces that will still make the cut, as the above dresses can perfectly coexist with Muiccia’s take on dark tropicana. And with the given weather condition changes that won’t give it a rest, something tells me that fashion afficionados will be into those outfits in no time. The only thing left to see is what he’s going to show on the Louis Vuitton show end of month.
Another September, another week of fashionistas teetering around Manhattan in impossibly high heels — yes, kids, it’s New York Fashion Week. If you listen closely, you just might hear the sound of Anna Wintour rolling her eyes in the front row of some designer she’s decided to ruin. To keep you in touch and up-to-date on the who, what, where, why and Wang of NYFW, we invited social media maven Gregory Littley to highlight the people, artists, content creators, models, and stylists that you must follow. And Nick Jonas.
I can hear you all asking “What does Nick Jonas have to do with Fashion Week?” Answer? Nick and his two JoBros are practically front row for all major Lincoln Center shows, that’s why he made our list. In between posting real time Instagrams of Richard Chai’s latest Spring 2014 collection, he shares a shirtless, ridiculously buff pic with his 836,000 followers. :: Full story here Unfiltered
