China-Born, Paris-Based Designers Spotlight Heritage At Paris Couture Fashion Week

This year’s Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 2013-2014 saw a range of designers from a diverse range of backgrounds presenting their creations on the runway. Among them were China-born emerging designers Laurence Xu and Yiqing Yin, both of whom utilize traditional Chinese elements in their couture lines to create their own distinct aesthetics. Making his mark on the French fashion world, Xu held his first ever haute couture fashion show at Pavillon Cambon. Themed Xiuqiu, which literally means “embroidered ball” in Chinese, the show seamlessly integrated Chinese style and Western elements. Dresses With Cutouts for this Summer

Keeping with the already-established midriff trend, this season’s little white dresses are all about the bits they’re missing. From Topshop Unique‘s sheer panels to Stella McCartney‘s sharp angles and lacy eyelets, these are summer frocks by way of paper snowflakes. I recently had the opportunity to create the production design for an amazing collection. The venue was at the Helen Mills in midtown in this multi-purpose room that we had wanted to convert completely. The staff was very nice and the resources limited, but overall it came out well. How Are L.A. Designers Doing at New York Fashion Week?

L.A.-based Tadashi Shoji and BCBG Max Azria both kicked off our favorite week of the year with inspired collections that maybe have us wishing for colder temperatures. Tadashi Shoji’s Fall 2013 collection, presented on Monday, was inspired by a trip to St. Petersburg, and his gowns were nothing but befitting of a Russian princess. They may be more appropriate for the Siberian cold front than Los Angeles, but his lux velvet

Richard Chai NYFW Challenges

chai 2013 01New York Fashion WeekRichard Chai showed his fall 2013 men’s and women’s fall 2013 runway collections at the Lincoln Center tents on Thursday, the first day of New York Fashion Week.

Inspiration: The designer seemed to be mining military motifs for many of his silhouettes, the world of men’s suiting for his fabrics and raiding a jewel box of gemstones to add pops of color to a palette based in brown, navy blue and olive drab.
