“You present one (idea) to the director, and if he doesn’t like it, you show up with another and another and another,” says Crowley, who created the costume and set designs for the London and Broadway productions of “Mary Poppins.”
Fortunately, Crowley doesn’t toss those unused designs into the shredder. So, when producers Thomas Schumacher, of Disney Theatrical Productions, and Cameron Mackintosh asked Crowley to design some new sets for the “Mary Poppins” national tour, he went back to his original sketches.
He wanted to preserve the spectacle, quality and excitement that made “Mary Poppins” a long-running success on Broadway and in London’s West End.
