Fashion illustration from the 1930′s enjoyed by many of our readers have an affinity to for artists like
L. Fellows,
Leslie Saalburg, and J. C. Leyendecker. While we mostly discuss editorial pictures, I want to focus on fashion illustration from magazine ads today. Back in the day, it was normal for a publisher to design an
ads together with the advertiser. Though as you can imagine, a magazine publisher could only employ a limited number of fashion illustrators to serve all their clients. In order to demonstrate each brand’s unique image, the fashion illustration were often very different from each other.

Interestingly, ads from the early 1930′s have a stronger resemblance of the 1920′s illustrations ads, which were more simplistic and relied more heavily on lines than details. Nevertheless, even during that time period, there were huge differences in drawing styles, and soon you would see illustrated ads that were just as nice as the illustration you all enjoy so much. (CNN) — Dark colors, bold patterns and shimmering fabrics emerged as prominent themes from New York’s Fall 2012 Fashion Week, which concluded Thursday after a packed schedule of more than 300 shows. While runway fashion tends to be over the top for most of us mere mortals, it sets the tone for what to expect in stores this fall. With around 320 shows and presentations this season — a 60% increase from five years ago, according to industry digest Business of Fashion — that’s a big pool of inspiration to draw upon. “New York Fashion Week just keeps getting bigger and bigger, and the calendar more packed,” said Leah Chernikoff, executive editor of style blog Fashionista, which had wall-to-wall coverage of Fashion Week. “There’s something nice about New York Fashion Week being so democratic — anyone with some serious hustle (and cash) can show.” Insiders dish: My most embarrassing Fashion Week moments Fashion Week also marks some of the biggest Read more…

The stylist-turned-reality-show-star visited New York this week on behalf of Piperlime, the footwear and apparel e-commerce site for which she is a celebrity guest editor. We took her appearance as a chance to pose some of our holiday style questions—and asked her BFF/makeup-and-hair-guru Joey Maalouf for a winter beauty tip while we were at it (hint: focus on the lips). Edited excerpts:
WSJ: What is one chic piece that women should invest in this season?
RZ: There are too many things to name, but I think a great faux fur is a great thing to buy. It doesn’t go out of style, it’s so luxurious, you can throw it over jeans and a T-shirt but you can also wear it with a cocktail dress, what’s so great about it.
WSJ: Do you have any tips on giving clothing as a holiday gift?
RZ: The people that you’re giving clothing to, you should know them well. You should give them a great sweater or a little jacket is great, because the fit isn’t as tricky. But it’s hard to give someone a pair of jeans. That’s tricky. With shoes, I’ve given shoes a lot, but you have to know that person’s size. It has to be, like, your best friend. – - read more Tips
