Fashion Illustrations in 1930′s AdsFashion illustration from the 1930′s enjoyed by many of our readers have an affinity to  for artists like  L. FellowsLeslie Saalburg, and J. C. Leyendecker. While we mostly discuss editorial pictures, I want to focus on fashion illustration from magazine ads today. Back in the day, it was normal for a publisher to design an ads together with the advertiser. Though as you can imagine, a magazine publisher could only employ a limited number of fashion illustrators to serve all their clients. In order to demonstrate each brand’s unique image, the fashion illustration were often very different from each other.

Interestingly, ads from the early 1930′s have a stronger resemblance of the 1920′s illustrations ads, which were more simplistic and relied more heavily on lines than details. Nevertheless, even during that time period, there were huge differences in drawing styles, and soon you would see illustrated ads that were just as nice as the illustration you all enjoy so much. Now, let’s discuss a few ads and styles: Read more…

Sandy Powell Oscar Contender

This is Powell’s 10th Oscar nomination. She has won the costume design award three times, including for Scorsese’s Howard Hughes biopic,“The Aviator.” The opportunity to work again with the director, a frequent collaborator, was a major motivation for her to sign on to the lavish 3-D family movie, but so was its source material, the illustrated children’s novel “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.”

This is Powell’s 10th Oscar nomination. She has won the costume design award three times, including for Scorsese’s Howard Hughes biopic,“The Aviator.” The opportunity to work again with the director, a frequent collaborator, was a major motivation for her to sign on to the lavish 3-D family movie, but so was its source material, the illustrated children’s novel “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.” The Oscar nominations were announced early Tuesday morning, but the day was heading into night in England, where costume designer Sandy Powell ended up learning the news of her Academy Award nod for Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” while she was stuck in traffic. “I was in a car being driven by a friend in a traffic jam on a rainy London afternoon,” Powell said. “David [Davenport], my [costume] supervisor, sent me a message saying, ‘You better start looking for a dress!’” - – more

Highlights: Oscar nominations doesn’t necessarily mean an Award but it’s close. Sandy Powell a seasoned Costume Designer has brought the art of Costume Design to a level of greatness. Other nominees for films like War Horse Steven Spielberg’s epic, The Descendants with George Clooney, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Hugo directed by Martin Scorsesse, are all a shoe for the Academy Awards. Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre has been playing host for the presentations in the past few years where winners like SOCIAL NETWORK, THE KING’S SPEECH and BABLE enjoyed being honored. Just think, back when it all started the Hollywood Roosevelt was host. Now it’s a great part of Oscar History. Don’t forget the many other categories: Art Direction, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actress Oscar and so on. Film Schools in LA are now very prevalent and talent from all over the globe go there waiting for their day in the sun. French actors, British actors and of course our American actors all await being an Oscar Winner whether they admit or not. Period costumes for The Silent Film “The Artist” inspired great artistry and performance by a great assortment of Talent from various parts of the World. Wow…good Old Hollywood!

Prominent Fashion Illustrators

Fashion Illustrators are fun, quirky and *gasp! fashion conscious! That’s what I used to think, but today I am not very sure which artist is a fashion illustrator, they all seem to create art and most of them do digital art for comic books, children illustrations and all the other inspirations that make their day. And I believe, to categorize any artist as a fashion illustrator just because ONE of their works was used for fashion is ridiculous. A true fashion illustrator, in my opinion live, drink and sleep fashion.

Therefore, I now present to you important fashion illustrators that can wow your day.

Rodarte’s Los Angeles County Museum of Art-acquired 10-piece spring/summer 2012 couture collection, which debuted last June at Florence fashion fair Pitti W, is finally scheduled to make its North American debut. LACMA will present the pieces in an exhibition titled, “Rodarte: Fra Angelico Collection,” from December 17 to February 5, 2012.

Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the California born and bred sisters behind Rodarte, found inspiration in Italian Renaissance art for the collection, specifically High Roman Baroque sculptor Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini’s “The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa,” as well as early Renaissance painter Fra Angelico’s frescoes in the monks’ cells at the Convent of San Marco. In a seemingly appropriate twist, LACMA will display the gowns against works from the same period that inspired them — including the circa 1491-95 painting by the Master of the Fiesole Epiphany, “Christ on the Cross With Saints Vincent Ferrer, John the Baptist, Mark, and Antoninus” — in the museum’s Italian Renaissance gallery. – - follow more about this

Just before this year’s Tokyo Game Show, Namco announced that in addition to their internal Project Soul development team, three external developers were helping create Soul Calibur V — CyberConnect2 on the story, and Creative Intelligence Arts/Forcewick Sound Design on the audio. And now they’re adding one more to that list, with Bayonetta character designer Mari Shimazaki contributing costumes. Namco calls her a “guest costume designer,” keeping the terminology they use for “guest characters” like Ezio in SCV.Mari Shimazaki told me via email she originally met SCV’s art director at a party, mentioned she was looking forward to the game, and then when she became a freelancer, found herself called in for a meeting. She has three designs in the game — the primary costume for new character Leixia, and the alternate costumes for Tira and Ivy. AKB48 Idol Designs Final Fantasy XIII 2 Costume For SerahYuko Oshima isn’t just a Final Fantasy XIII-2 judge, she’s also a costume designer. Square Enix asked the AKB48 idol to design two costumes for Serah and her moogle. Starting on November 15, fans will be able to vote on which one makes it into the game as downloadable content on the Judge13 page. Oshima calls this first outfit “exposure and defense.” When designing this costume she wondered is it really possible for Final Fantasy female characters to fight with so much showing. Oshima thought adding pointed shoes and a shield would make Serah ready for a fight. – - more about Yuko

Alain Hranitelj, ‘Zarkana’ Costume Designer

“In talking with the director and other designers, we envisioned an Art Deco theme for the Zarkana costumes,” notes Slovenia-based designer Alain Hranitelj, about his first complete project for Cirque du Soleil (he had worked on an uncompleted project for Macau several years ago)“In talking with the director and other designers, we envisioned an Art Deco theme for the Zarkana costumes,” notes Slovenia-based designer Alain Hranitelj, about his first complete project for Cirque du Soleil (he had worked on an uncompleted project for Macau several years ago).  “There is a lot inspired by Erte and Paul Poiret, and that is the most beautiful period,” says Hranitelj. “I love the clothes and the costumes. Erte was a great illustrator and I love the costumes he did. They are so different from costumes today. We are more serious, they had more fun: We have fun during the process but those costumes were really fun… The crazy 20’s.” The result is a contemporary version of the 20th-century Art Deco aesthetic. In working on Zarkana, Hranitelj describes a two-year process, one year for sketches and research, the second year for production of the costumes. “I like to speak with the actual artists and performers, and sometimes have to change things… I like the interaction with them, to see how they think…how they see the character, and pull their ideas into the costumes, sometimes a perfect match.”   – - please Read more HERE
